Overlooking Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the Virunga Mountains
Kaara Lodge offers stunning vistas: dense forests, mountains stretching up into the clouds, winding roads, untouched fauna and a diverse variety of bird species. All these can be viewed from your private balcony or the sweeping terraces in the dining and lounge.
Kaara Lodge is located in the Southwestern corner of Uganda, 2134m (7000ft) in altitude with unparalleled views of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Virunga Mountains.
We are found in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable national park in the Rushaga sector, the most visited of the gorilla tracking sectors in Uganda because it hosts the highest number of habituated gorilla families including Nshongi, Kahungye, Bweza, Busingye, Bikyingi, Mishaya, Mucunguzi, and Rwigi.
Gorilla families in Uganda that are habituated (made accustomed to human contact) are 23, and Rushaga boasts 8 of those 23, meaning it has the highest concentration of Gorilla families at 35%. This means trekking from Rushaga sector gives you the highest possible chance of seeing these magnificent creatures.
By Road
Driving from Uganda: Drive from Entebbe or Kampala, via Masaka, Mbarara to Kabale. In Kabale proceed on the Kabale-Kisoro highway up to Muko town where you will make a right turn off at the Kagorogoro Junction/Owamuhedi: at this point you are 30kms from the Lodge. That Junction has many signposts of different lodges and Kaara Lodge has a signpost too. Stay on that road until you reach Terrace Junction (another Kaara signpost is there) at which point you turn right, driving upwards and stay on that road until you reach Kaara Lodge.
The entire road trip takes approximately 8 to 9 hours with minimum stopovers.
By Air
There are daily scheduled early morning flights to and from Kisoro airstrip from Entebbe international airport, via Aerolink.com.
Chartered flights to Kisoro airstrip that offer flexibility in time are also available on request to and from Entebbe international airport.
From Kisoro Airport drive to Rubuguri Town Council and continue to Terrace Junction at which point you turn left (Kaara signpost there) and begin your ascent to the lodge.
From Kigali or Rwanda
Fly to Kigali international airport and connect by road to Rushaga sector through Cyanika border in Kisoro which takes about 5 to 6 hours to Kaara Lodge
